Rosario Murphy, M.S., Ph.D.
Rosario Murphy, M.S., Ph.D., has a Master of Science degree in Counseling psychology, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Hypnotherapy. She has been licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in Peru since 1993. She was a staff psychologist at the San Isidro Mental Hospital in Lima, Peru, from 1992-1994 and then had a private practiced until 1998. She provided counseling services to expatriates working in Central Asia and the Middle East from 1998 until 2001. She now makes her home in Virginia.Dr. Rosario’s approach is eclectic as she draws from many theoretical approaches to counseling. While her pragmatic approach lets her use the approach that she feels will be best for a specific client she emphasizes cognitive behavioral approaches. This approach is an insight-focused therapy that emphasizes recognizing and changing negative thoughts and maladaptive beliefs. Often times this therapy includes systematic desensitization, relaxation techniques and modeling and the use of home assignments.
Dr. Rosario has been described by her clients as being “genuinely warm and concerned”, “honestly empathic”, “a person who provides nonjudgmental acceptance”, and “easy to talk to”.
Dr. Rosario is fluent in both English and Spanish and conducts counseling sessions in both languages. Because of her extensive international experience she has developed deep multicultural sensitivity and understanding.
She works with her clients to help them:
· Practice new behaviors and replace old ineffective ones.
· Create specific interventions that have been demonstrated to be effective.
· The client identifies desired outcomes by specifying positive changes that she/he wants from counseling.
· Learn to distinguish between fantasy and reality and to test their thoughts against reality
· Learn to cope with stresses produced by daily living.
· Develop specific problem-solving and coping skillsRosario is available Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 10:30 pm (all times EST) for appointments.
